I knew it!

You know how I always talk about our toasters becoming intelligent and telling us we eat too much toast? Well look what I found! That guy up there is a toaster that can, via an Ethernet connection, become depressed if it doesn't get used enough, and jealous if it finds out other connected toasters are being used more! The future is today!

It turns out Garfield was way ahead of me this whole time, and I think we'll all feel the same if it ever comes to this.

  1. I don't think I would ever be brave enough to connect the Ethernet. Every time you talk about the toaster taking over I laugh because in the late 90's there was a Disney movie that came out, Smart House; I think about this move every time you talk about the toaster. A fully automated house, Katy Sagal as the main character, the smart house starts out as something cool until she then takes over the house! She puts the house on lock down, won't prepare what they want to eat because she decides it's not healthy. Maybe back then they had a good idea on where technology was going.

  2. That is crazy! I would never hook my toaster or microwave or any other household item up via Ethernet connection. Just like you said in class, I do not want my vacuum becoming depressed and deciding it doesn't want to vacuum today. I thick the technology is truly amazing, however I do not want to use. I praise those who spend their time thinking up these clever ideas, but they aren't for everyone. I don't even think the majority would use this type of technology, as they want to be in control, they do not want the machines to have control over them, at least I don't think so.

  3. Wow, I can't believe the day is here and people are really moving forward with this advanced technology. I agree with Rebecca, this technology is definitely not going to be accepted by everyone. I expect that people who mostly use this type of technology are people who lack human interaction and substitute it with an appliance. I also thought about the Disney movie Smart House when I read this. The automated house was really cool, up until she started getting crazy thinking she was the mother of the house and wouldn't let the owners do what they wanted. This is really frightening to think that people are actually working towards technology like this. I also think it's funny though because it's ridiculous to want to have a machine to have feelings or telling you what you can or cannot do.

  4. This video cracked me up; Charles is hilarious, his voice seemed a bit lost when he talked about Brad leaving…so sweet, so subtle. Having said that, I think this is so crazy awesome and I want to host a toaster as soon as possible. I think it would so funny to walk into my kitchen and see the toaster freaking out because I haven’t used it in days. I am curious how many times a week it needs to be used before it starts to get upset.
At present, I have a toaster and a toaster oven sitting next to each other on my butchers block and I can’t remember the last time I used either of them. They used to get a lot of use, but they have been sitting there for months (now I feel bad; Brad would not accept this). If I were to host a toaster, I would probably find myself going through a lot of bread making toast for no reason just to keep it happy. I don’t care, I still want one.

    1. I would be in big trouble if my toaster started to have feelings, I rarely use it. I would be in its firing path everyday. As for the movie "Smart House", like everyone is stating, its was really cool at first, until the house started taking control and fighting back.

  5. My boyfriend and I once visited a friend's house and while in the kitchen the mother of his friend asked him if he liked the toaster, he told her it was nice, and then she told him that she had found it in the trash and the toaster told her that if she took it(the toaster) with her, that she would work for many years, then she laughed and made fun of us for believing that. I thought that was really funny, but after seeing this video I'm not sure she was really joking. Every time you mention the toaster in class it brings me back to this story. I would never use anything like this. I love laying in bed watching tv, I cannot imagine having to constantly pay attention to my toaster.

  6. This is very funny and another way that technology is used for different things. I personally think it's a little silly and wouldn't be relevant to my life but i'm sure someone in the world would find this very helpful, haha.

  7. Now I not only have to satisfy the needs of my family but also the programmed and ever increasing needs of my appliances? I have no idea why anyone would want such a device. A device that can feel neglected and can send out an e-blast so a service can come take it away; what if I wanted toast or eggo waffles that day? I'm good with a regular old toaster without an ethernet connection

  8. This is comical, pure comedy! I wonder if this is going to have an impact on other future appliances. I certainly don't think it will, and I don't see a demand for toasters with emotions. I think the only people who would invest in something like this would be the "class-clown" type person, or anyone who wants a good laugh. Does anyone disagree with me? Will there ever be a demand for an invention like this? If so, give your reasoning! I am curious.

  9. Comical to say the least. Don't see myself into a toaster that gets jealous. We already have to deal with human beings getting jealous , so this is one last thing I would acquire even though it shows how far technology has come.
