Walking garden lamps

You know what's wrong with my garden? The lights don't up and walk around on their own to give the garden a new look every once in a while.

Well, my problem has been solved! If I'm willing to do a little tinkering, I can get centrally controlled yet autonomous garden lights that are capable of monitoring their surroundings and relocating to different spots around the yard, either for a new look or to avoid people walking around.

The linked article indicates that the robots, that run $1,000, are actually just 4-legged robots. You can put anything you want on them; cameras, drinks, they could even come and g through a doggie-door.

I just want quadri-pedal garden lights that walk around on their own.

  1. The idea that walking garden lamps could soon be in my backyard seems pretty amazing. It’s unfortunate for the garden lamps, however, since my dog will certainly destroy them as soon as they begin to move. Despite that, I went to YouTube and watched a video of two of them being tested, and they were not as peaceful as I they appear in the picture. They are actually kind of noisy and a little scary.

    1. I agree with you they are very noisy and scary. They look like big spiders. I like quiet place so these lamps won't work for me.

    2. They do kind of look like spiders. They reminded me of the crabs I used to runaway from on the beach when I was little, lol.

  2. Robots in general seem like such a futuristic thing and the fact that they’re reality in my lifetime is pretty neat. While I would prefer a robot to bring me my cell phone or the remote or a cup of coffee, a garden robot is still pretty neat. That just goes to show how culture plays into what is significant to some. In the Japanese culture peaceful gardens, meditation and channeling peace are all important to them. The fact that these robot lamps update the dynamics of the garden is probably important to them. As the article states, this is only the beginning phase. Surely in time these robots will be updated to do much more than just wander around.

  3. I like the fact that I can put anything in them. I would put my drink in one and program it to follow me around. This is a great idea for someone like me. I hate when I'm in the pool and the floor is too hot to go get my drink, well problem solved. I just hope it doesn't follow me into the pool

  4. Like Shannon, I too watched the video of these lamps on YouTube. Honestly, I think they would scare me! I see no use for them and will stick with the non-mobile garden lamps. Ever since seeing "I, Robot", I feel like they'd have a mind of their own. All jokes aside, I feel this is a luxury that very few can afford; I just don't see the use for them. I wonder how much it would cost to keep them maintained, and how long they are warrantied for. If it starts pouring outside and they get wet will the move to where the rain isn't falling, or could this rain potentially damage them?

  5. It just amazes me how someone out there just came up with the idea of designing walking lamps. I feel that this is just a platform to a bigger idea and are just trying to make money off of many who will surely want the latest in garden lamps at their house. Its pretty cool that you can put different things on it. In the future it might be part of the security systems offered by some companies, who knows.

  6. After I read the post from 3/6/14 about the hacking of the routers this scares me more imagine when these "robots" become more sophisticated. Eventually they can become hacked and do inside crimes within one’s home. They can easily steal, hurt people, or even worse be the subject of murder. Another thing is that in my point of view it’s just making us lazier. If there is a robot that you can control then what is the point in getting up and fixing up something to eat when there is a robot that will do that for you. To me it is a great opportunity but then it also can be used for many negative aspects.

  7. I feel the same way as you guys do on this one. I think it's great that we can have something so well designed to do things like this. Moving garden lights is not that important to me and not for that price. Yes, they are loud and don't look appealing. Maintenance seems like it would be a pain to keep up with. When it gets to where they can do more helpful things for us personally will be more appealing. Right now I just see more negative than I do positive. But they have only just begun so in time we will see.

  8. I can see where a lot of this robotic technology is heading and very quickly at that. Moving garden lights are not something that is important to me, but placing a camera on the robots would be good for security related tasks. Perhaps they could interact with a home security system. I would have them patrol the yard. Like all emerging technology, the price is a bit steep.
