Creepy robot Friday!

I'll just leave these here. Prepare to never sleep again.

Unlike the previous two, I love this spider one. Not only is it 3D printed, It moves accurately, the same way a spider moves by coordinating legs on both sides of its body so the ones that aren't moving it forward form a triangle keeping it upright. It's threat pose and lateral moves are also accurate based on actual observations and measurements of multi-legged organisms (that right-left look it does in the beginning isn't something real spiders do, though. Yet...).

  1. After viewing these videos the two things that come to my mind is Darpa and the Pentagon. I remember a few years back in 2012 Darpa released their latest development the AlphaDog, which can walk 20 miles without a break and lift 300+ lbs. The pentagon also released information on their funded Atlas robot which refuses to be knocked over even standing on one leg as well as walk over rocky or rough terrain. I do beleive that in the future this would be put out to civilian use as technology progresses. Some thoughts such as a robotic service dog or robot. As I was typing this I do recall a funny animatronic baby prank. It involves a few guys scaring people in NY with a animatronic devil looking baby. You can find it by looking up on youtube " Devil Baby Attack" or go to the shared link: http://youtu.be/PUKMUZ4tlJg

  2. I found the robot videos really cool! It seems to me that night clubs would be all over this type of technology. How great would it be to have these dancers in a cage when entering a nightclub. Its not really my scene anymore, but I found myself very engaged to see how she would dance next. I think from a distance you may not even be able to tell that this wasn't a real girl dancing. As far as the baby and spider I could only think of the Halloween applications for my yard displays. My family at my urging goes all out decorating for the holidays, Halloween and Christmas in particular. We have animated figures now, and every year I add more. It probably is an obnoxiuos waste of money, but I search all over the internet about 2 months prior to the upcoming holiday to see what we can add this year to improve our display. I find it to be a great deal of fun, and it gives the family something we can all do creatively together!

  3. It is amazing to see how for we have come with technology and how life like and fluid the movements of robots in the videos you posted have come. The face they put on the dancing robot was a good touch; it adds to creepy factor. Even the lip movements were spot on. I'm not sure how mimicking facial movements and and infant motions could be useful to use now or in the future. I know several programs are currently developing robots based off of animals and insects. Like Johnny mentioned in his post, the alpha dog and several other programs attempt to create a pack mule that does not fatigue and can move with troops over difficult terrain. This type of development can be extremely useful, but the mimicking of other movements may only have entertainment purposes.

  4. These videos were a bit disturbing. The technology behind it is pretty cool and realistic. If they were to put one of these dancers in the clubs, I think they would receive a positive response. Technology is all based around our generation and I think people would like this. The spider seems really awesome. I think they could use this to spy on people. These videos were definitely original in the nature of making robots human/ real like.

  5. The videos were interesting. I could envision a whole new "futuristic" nightclub theme here in Vegas with different types of robot characters. Reminds me of the movie "Future World" where you could go to an elite futuristic entertainment complex. The problem in the movie was that the humans kept making the robots better and upgrading their programs until the robots were able to think for themselves and tried to kill all the humans and take over. The technology is certainly getting better. The face on the female robot was a bit creepy. I loved the spider and could see many uses for that in small spaces where it could get into and get video.

  6. The first two were a bit creepy. I'm not sure how, when or why we would use or need a robot baby. The dancer I can understand, it would be a big hit on those who love technology and would like to be entertained by something like that. The spider I loved, it makes me wonder how real other animal shaped robots would look. Maybe security companies could use them and provide the customer with the desired "pet".
