One bigger, one smaller

Over on Engadget there is an editorial discussing the encroachment of Google devices into Apple territory, and vice versa. As the author points out, Apple long eschewed the idea of smaller devices, and what were once small devices continually get larger and larger. Prices for these new tablets are still unknown.

I use my iPad a lot, for some relatively involved tasks such as remote log-in to my machines at home. Even on the current screen it is occasionally diffficult to navigate something like that, although the app I use is very well designed and very useable (LogMeIn, if you're interested).

I have a 7-inch Android tablet, the HTC Flyer which is sadly no longer made, and the iPad, with its retina display and 10 inch screen. Both of them are great devices, and I find the screen size on both to be appropriate for how I use them. LogMeIn, however, would never work on a 7 inch screen.

So my question is two fold, however both parts ask the same thing but about different devices; whether you have a smartphone or a feature phone, do you feel the screen size is adequate for how you use it, and if you have a tablet, do you feel the screen size is adequate for how you use it?

Do you think it's wise for Apple to introduce the smaller tablet? Do you plan on getting one?

  1. I gave up on having a tablet (after I had one shipped to me with a blown mobo) and decided to just stick with my 10" netbook and a smartphone to run around town with.

For the most part, both devices do exactly what they should: my netbook is great for class and my phone works well around town. The good thing is that neither are particularly distracting since I always go back to a HUGE monitor and a real keyboard at the end of the day.

That said, I'm not a woman who would be opposed to Apple coming out with a smaller tablet. For me, it normally boils down to: `Will it fit in my purse'; and `Do i really have to carry that thing around?!'.

  2. I have a smartphone and we decided to go with one that has a bigger screen. For one it is easier to see and my husband's hands are not small so it is easier for him to use. I do feel that the size is correct for my phone. Now about getting a tablet I do not know. I just got my first smartphone 6 months ago and I cannot afford one at the moment. Although I think it might help me in school especially when reading the textbooks because then I only have to carry the tablet and not a heavy book. I guess I will have to see what the future holds.

  3. I do have a smart phone and sometimes I think the screen is too small for items that I’m trying to pull up. I wanted to get my son a tablet for his birthday, only because the screen was big and he likes to play with my phone a lot. Making the screen smaller defeats the purpose of the tablet, if people wanted a phone they would buy a phone.

  4. I am probably one of the ony people in the world without a smart phone. I have a cell phone that makes and receives calls and texts. I used to have an iPhone, but it was so darn slow and annoying, I decided to get rid of it and pay half as much. I do, however, have a Kindle Fire. I really enjoy it and I think the screen is perfect size. It is not too big or too small.

At the moment, the only apple product I own is an ipod shuffle and I intend on it being that way for at least a little while.

  5. I do no own a smartphone right now.Personally, I just bought the cheapest model phone with a reasonable plan. My cellp hone doesn't have a camera, video or apps can on it. I just it for texting and phone calls. I decided to put off getting a iphone or android cell phone until I'm done with this semester, because I can use Skype on my laptop without any additional charges. However, I do plan on getting the ipad or kindle.

I think that Apple's decision to make the screen smaller on the tablet is left up to personal user preferences.

  6. I think the point brought up about how the machine is used is the most important thing to put into consideration before buying a tablet or iPad or anything of that sort.

I don't think that Apple shouldn't make a new, smaller piece of equipment, its just the way that it will be used by the user I think where the question lies here.

In putting the users use of machines into perspective, I have an iTouch and just a old, brick flip phone and for me, I really need nothing bigger than that because for one, I hate carrying large unnecessary things around and two I'd more likely rather have something small and convent rather than carrying something large and fragile around unless I am at home or on a trip in a hotel. Then a larger tablet is more convent, but if someone is on the go a lot (like I am) something smaller and handier like a Pom Pilot would be more useful for me as a product user.

  7. I do not own a smartphone. The only Apple product that I own is an iPod Nano and I tend to keep it that way as of right now. I own a regular cell phone and the reason being is because of the frustration that lies with problems such like these when it comes to the more advanced technological phones.

It is ultimately up to the users to decide whether the screen should be bigger or smaller. Each user may have different preferences, I guess depending on how big or small people's fingers are or how good or bad their sight. However, since there is already a bigger screen and some people are satisfied with that screen, there may be people who would like a smaller screen so it would not be a bad idea to introduce a new tablet with a smaller screen so that there is an equal advantage for most Apple customers.

  8. I have the Iphone 4 which was supplied by my company. It definitely does what I need it to do. I am constantly on the road and can check email and respond to any of them quickly without having to look at it on my computer. I have only had it about 2 months now and am still getting used to it. Previously, I had the Blackberry torch, so the difference between the two is night and day.

I do not own a tablet, but have thought about purchasing the Ipad. Maybe the company will invest in them for us? I can only wish right now. The only reason Apple should introduce the smaller tablet is if they have done adequate marketing research which provides support for such a product.
